What can an employee expect on a typical workday?

Our staffers typically work 4 to 4.5 days per week. We spend the first hour, starting at 8:00 a.m., cleaning, servicing, rigging and warming-up the vessels. The customers begin arriving at 9:00 a.m., and throughout the day staff members retrieve boats and give boat orientations to the customers, informing them of any rules, and explaining how to properly return the vessel. Employees also maintain, fuel and repair the vessels and patrol the waverunner area. As the day ends (we close at 6:00 p.m.), we de-rig the sailboats, store the windsurfers and kayaks, and secure the waverunners for the night.

Bumper boat attendants help get the customers on and off the boats in the pool. The climbing wall attendants help the customers get in their harnesses, clip them to the belay properly, and provide any other assistance. The bumper boats and climbing wall stay open until 10:00 p.m.

When things are slow we stay busy by maintaining the boats and the property. While the work is often physical, it’s not too demanding.

Staffers usually work the same four days all summer with an hour off for lunch. Working four days per week means you will usually come in just under 40 hours. A staffer who wants to work a fifth day needs to be an exceptional worker. If they need a different day off from their normal schedule then they typically trade with a fellow employee.

Remember, we are a weather dependant business. There will be times when we have to shut down and send people home. This may affect your cash flow. I will try my hardest to meet your needs.

Also, please keep in mind that we are not a smoker friendly place of employment.

What is required to work at Kitty Hawk Water Sports?

Employees must be:

  • A morning person, ready to go after you punch in
  • Friendly and helpful; able to communicate well with customers
  • Ready to work outdoors in the sun and water

Where can I find housing for the summer?

One of the most difficult hurdles to overcome is your summer housing. The Outer Banks does not have many summer-long rentals and trying to get a lease for less than four months is extremely difficult. We do house some staff in a group house--first come, first served. This is optional and you are always encouraged to find your own.
