So much to see on this exciting kayak tour! The Alligator River Wildlife Refuge is home to alligators, black bears, and the endangered red wolf. The refuge is also habitat for over to over 250 bird species. Bald cypress and loblolly pines shadow the mysterious black waters of winding creeks. These waters were used long ago by loggers and moonshiners during prohibition. This tour runs mid May – December. Tour time is approximately 2hrs. Meeting location is Buffalo City Rd about 20 minutes from Nags Head.

Driving Directions

Using Google Maps, search for “Alligator river – Buffalo City kayak put-in.”

Take 64W and cross the bridge to Ronoake Island. Stay straight and cross 2nd bridge, Virginia Dare Memorial Bridge. Continue 9.6 miles and look for a sign on the right for Buffalo City Rd and continue approximately 2 miles to the end of this gravel road and you’ll see the put-in. Please be sure to park on the right-hand side of the road.

Please be sure to arrive 15 minutes prior to the tour start time.

The Pea Island Wildlife Refuge consist of over 5800 acres of land and nearly 26,000 acres of water. View the variety of rare birds as you paddle through the vast salt marsh on the Pamlico sound. The refuge is on the Atlantic Flyway and boast a list of over 360 bird species sightings. The waters are shallow and clear giving views of a variety of sealife below. This tour runs mid May – December. Tour time is approximately 2hrs. Meeting location is 6 miles South of Oregon Inlet at MP 34.

Using Google Maps, search for “Pea Island, Kinnakeet NC.”

Continue south past Pea Island Visitor Center approximately 3 miles. You’ll cross the New Inlet Bridge (aka Captain Richard Etheridge bridge) and about 100 yards after crossing the paved parking lot will be on the right hand side of the road at milepost 34. The mileposts are sometimes missing because of road construction so don’t rely solely on the milepost.
