Kayaking is the best way to explore this refuge, which is home to 365 species of birds. The marshland islands and inlets are vulnerable to erosion from storms and hurricanes, giving the “birders’ paradise” its unique beauty. Our tour groups often see stingray, oysters, and hermit crabs.

These tours depart from the New Inlet parking area six miles south of Oregon Inlet at mile post 34 in the mornings and a few hours before sunset.

Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve, one of few remaining maritime forests in the world, is a vital habitat for various migratory birds, mammals, and reptiles. Our permit to tour the Alligator River National Wildlife Refuge has been expanded to include a less- traveled part of the refuge. Unlike the swamp trails of our original Alligator River tour, this excursion explores the complex trails of brackish marsh creeks.

Guides lead the way through to a deserted beach that you’ll explore on foot. Depending on the winds, tour groups will either continue to paddle in the protection of the marsh or venture out into the open waters of the Albemarle Sound.
