Mile Post 16 High Wind Center

Memorial Weekend has been good around here for wind. It’s been around 6.5 every day and customers are blasting around. I’m really liking our new RRD Fire Ride. It jibes effortlessly and is very forgiving. Just found out the windmill at the old Windmill Point restaurant will be moved to Roanoke Island. Now all the old windsurfers won’t be able to find the windsurf spot down here without the landmark. Kiteboarding is coming soon. Stay tuned.

While some of you were still digging out of the snow, the Outer Banks was watching the tide come in on the sound side (hoy toyd on the sound soyd). Look at my youtube link at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Vz_s0ASbA8. If you look carefully you’ll notice the parking lot at Miller’s Waterfront Restaurant is entirely under water. Down here we don’t get a lot of snow days but we will call off school if we get flooding or winds so high it’s a danger to cross a bridge while driving a school bus. And if you miss school altogether you get to make it up on a Saturday. So it’s pay now or pay later.

Saturday was one of those days you brag to all of your suburbanite friends. After a week of crappy weather it was forcasted to be a beautiful day and there was a big swell on the ocean. Since the kids were sleeping in I decided to sneak to the beach with my stand-up paddleboard. When I got to the Black Pelican at MP 4.5 in Kitty Hawk the parking lot was full with surfer’s cars. After finding a place to park I scouted out the break and I was pretty initimidated. The surf was at least head high and the shore break was really tough. I stood there trying to psyche myself up because I’d never been in surf that big, much less w/ my paddleboard. Finally, because there were so many other surfers out there, I decided to give it a try.
